Gay411 Issues: Inactive Profiles, Inconsistent Geolocation and an Outdated Interface

Recently, we discussed this new software that is posing strong competition to Grindr: Sniffies. This platform offers a live, instant dating service that is perceived as much more user-friendly, safer, and more efficient than Grindr.

Read our article about Sniffies here.

Since entering the market, Sniffies has attracted more and more users by offering a different approach to traditional dating apps. Unlike Grindr, which is mainly based on profile grids, Sniffies uses a real-time interactive map that allows users to quickly see people nearby.

This interface is often seen as more user-friendly because it makes it easier to search for encounters based on a precise location and provides an immediate overview of activity in a given area. For many users, this reduces the time needed to connect with someone.

In terms of efficiency, Sniffies focuses on immediacy. Users can quickly communicate with people located just a few blocks away, which encourages more spontaneous encounters. The platform also allows for partial anonymity, without requiring a profile as detailed as the one used on Grindr.

Gay411: outdated profiles, inconsistencies, and a stagnating platform

A recent visit to the long-standing Gay411 revealed several issues that still do not appear to have been resolved. Good-faith errors or simple pretexts to avoid optimizing the platform? Let’s take a closer look at what is happening.

During the week ending May 31, 2026, I checked the members’ profiles at least three times per day, from different locations across the city of Montreal. The first observation, which we had already made before, is that some profiles are very old. The photos shown are the same ones I saw when I was a member of Gay411 in the early 2000s.

Are these profiles kept by Gay411 to inflate the perceived number of users on the platform, or do these members—who are very numerous—actually wish to display photos that are more than 20 years old? I would be very surprised.

I believe a cleanup of accounts is necessary, and that inactive accounts older than five years, as well as those closed at the request of users, should be removed from the platform.

Relevance issues, user age, and technical structure

Another observation suggesting that the website is no longer relevant concerns the average age of its members. Good luck finding young men aged 18 to 35. Based on my observation, it is mostly men aged 40 to 75 who display profiles, and even then, only if those profiles are active.

I will not even mention the layout or visual presentation of the site, which has barely changed since its early days, with a design reminiscent of the 1990s.

One element that concerns me greatly is the lack of any physical presence in Quebec or Canada, while Gay411, which is a paid service, uses payment platforms that operate entirely online on an international scale. Money is taken from Canadians, but where are taxes actually being paid?

The site Gay411 (gay411.com) does not, strictly speaking, have any publicly listed headquarters like a traditional consumer-facing company.

However, according to domain registration records and corporate databases, the entity associated with the site often appears under an anonymized or privacy-protection service:

Registered name: PERFECT PRIVACY, LLC (domain owner privacy protection service)

Administrative address:
5335 Gate Parkway, PO Box 459
Jacksonville, Florida 32256
United States

A quick online search shows that the listed address is in fact associated with Network Solutions, a U.S.-based company specializing in domain name registration, web hosting, and other online infrastructure services.

Bugs, geolocation issues, and business model concerns

Another strange bug I recently encountered caught my attention. On the Gay411 website, there are two main sections more relevant to dating: one showing users currently online, where profiles from all over Quebec can be viewed with no real consistency in distance, and another section that appears to compete with Grindr or Sniffies, displaying profiles based on proximity.

I examined this section for several days, sometimes from my home in Rosemont, sometimes from a café in downtown Montreal more than 14 km away, and it was only on Saturday, May 30, that I noticed the profiles remained exactly the same—and worse, the distance between them and me remained unchanged regardless of my location.

The same individuals, always in the same order, appeared as if they were all within less than 90 meters, which is practically inside my living room, whether I was at home or downtown Montreal.

This situation may result from a permanent bug that Gay411 does not seem willing to fix, from software that is too outdated to properly interpret real distances, or simply from an illusion intentionally presented to users. Since it is impossible to contact Gay411, we will likely never know the answer.

There are two ways to use Gay411: the free service, which provides basic access to profiles and features, and a paid account, which simply offers more pages of members—equally outdated as in the free version. Caution is needed because once you subscribe to a paid account, returning to the free version later appears to be nearly impossible.

User experience, restrictions, and critical conclusion

Strategy to force members to pay to keep their profile?

About 15 years ago, as part of an investigation into irregular activities in a criminal case involving allegations of HIV transmission, I used Gay411’s paid services to obtain continuous and guaranteed access to all profiles of the alleged victims in the case.

After more than a year, once my investigation was completed and my findings published, I decided not to renew my quarterly subscription and returned to the free version. However, my access was then blocked, even though my profile remained visible on the site for a long period. All attempts to create a free account from my computer were systematically linked to my IP address, regardless of the email used. For about five years, I had no access to the free version of Gay411 and consequently lost all my contacts.

Only recently was I able to reopen a new free account.

Final assessment

In conclusion, Gay411 presents an opaque and difficult-to-trace model, offering profiles that are more or less active and services that do not truly compete with major gay dating platforms such as Grindr or Sniffies. In the event of a payment dispute or transaction issue, it becomes difficult to clearly identify the responsible company, which represents a non-negligible financial risk.
