Few independent LGBTQ+ media outlets in Canada today can claim nearly three decades of continuous existence. Some numbers go far beyond simple statistics. They tell a story, a trajectory, a long-term commitment.
Today, Gay Globe reaches the milestone of 11,900 published articles. It is not just a number: it is the concrete result of continuous work, article after article, over nearly three decades.
It all began in the late 1990s in Montreal, at a time when the project was still called Revue Le Point. The context was very different back then: mainstream media rarely covered LGBTQ+ realities, and communities often had to create their own spaces to stay informed, support one another, and defend their rights. It was in this spirit that the media outlet was founded in 1998, with a strong focus on public health, particularly during the HIV/AIDS crisis that was severely impacting our communities.
Throughout the 2000s, the project evolved and matured. In 2009, the transition to Gay Globe Magazine marked a major turning point: the range of topics expanded, the content became more structured, while maintaining an editorial line deeply rooted in LGBTQ+ realities. Politics, culture, rights, health, society… the scope broadened, but the essence remained the same.
Then came the digital transformation. Moving online changed everything: it allowed us to publish more regularly, reach a wider audience, and most importantly systematically archive everything we produced, while continuing to maintain a high-quality print magazine. It is this consistency and regularity that have brought us today to this symbolic number.
11,900 articles represent thousands of hours of work, monitoring national and international news, covering struggles for rights, community health issues, cultural evolution, and social debates. It is also a form of collective memory that we have patiently built, one article at a time.
Over the years, Gay Globe expanded beyond the borders of Quebec to reach an international audience, while remaining faithful to its mission: making our realities visible, documenting both our progress and our challenges, and maintaining an independent voice.
In a media world where many independent projects disappear or lose their direction, this figure of 11,900 articles is also proof of perseverance. It shows that we are still here, still standing, still committed, after nearly thirty years.
