VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA —- 07/28/2020 —- LGBTQ+ Catholic organizations around the globe have sent letters to the Managing Director for Weltbild Gruppe Christian Sailer requesting that Weltbild bookstores actively market queer inclusive material.
As Pride events worldwide have been cancelled this year, many are turning to alternative measures to celebrate.
“It would seem that they’ve changed and are offering LGBTQ+ material but not actively marketing it. This is a lost opportunity especially during this Pride season,” says Canadian LGBTQ+ author Robert Joseph Greene.
In 2013, Weltbild Gruppe had ran into controversy when they informed Canadian publisher Icon Empire Press that they were no longer carrying their books because Icon Empire Press is a gay themed publishing house. At that time, Weltbild Gruppe was 100% owned by the collective of German archdioceses and many saw their selling of soft core heterosexual porn as hypocritical to Christian teachings.
Now, Weltbild Gruppe is under new ownership and the LGBTQ+ community hopes this means a change in their policy towards offering LGBTQ+ material in Weltbild bookstores.
Greene has personally written to Weltbild asking that their bookstores carry his newly German translated book: Diese High School hat Schränke ( ISBN 978-1-927124-40-6) which is a gay teenage coming of age story.
Icon Empire Press is a publisher of literary works by LGBTQ+ authors exploring the human spirit.
