On August 1, 2024, on Lady Gaga’s main social media channels, a post proudly claimed that an analysis of Google searches showed that the keyword « Lady Gaga » had been the most searched term worldwide for the past week. The claim seemed plausible, but given that it had already been announced that Céline Dion had been the most viewed performer at the 2024 Paris concert on YouTube, we wanted to verify this claim with further research.
The only way to measure the popularity of a topic or keyword on Google is to use its analysis tool named Google Trends at https://trends.google.com/trends/. Comparing the terms « Lady Gaga » and « Céline Dion » globally over the past week, Lady Gaga came out on top. This would confirm the claim, if, and I stress if, we didn’t consider that Céline with an acute accent is only written in French.
So, a new search was conducted, this time using the term « Celine Dion » without the accent, and voilà, the result changed dramatically. According to the comparative tool, Lady Gaga was searched only one-third as much as Celine Dion, as shown in the graph above, which can be viewed here.
Conclusion: Lady Gaga’s social media management team either made a mistake by only considering Céline’s name with an acute accent or deliberately made this omission. Obviously, we will never know, but it is confirmed: « Celine Dion » was searched on Google three times more than « Lady Gaga. »
