A historic ovation at the World Economic Forum in Davos

For the third time in the history of the World Economic Forum in Davos, held this week, a head of state received a standing ovation from the thousand people present, following an absolutely revolutionary and bold speech. The speech by the Prime Minister of Canada was unanimously praised by those present, including several dozen heads of government, but it deeply angered the President of the United States, Donald Trump.

Canada ready to take on new global leadership

A few months ago, Prime Minister Carney declared in a press conference that if the United States no longer wished to assume the role of global leader, Canada would take that place.

A key speech on the end of the old world order

In his special address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the old rules-based world order is no longer relevant and that the world is going through a « rupture » rather than a transition. He explained that the traditional view, where economic integration and international institutions guaranteed security and prosperity, has been replaced by an era of great power rivalries using the economy as a tool of coercion.

A call for unity among middle powers

Carney emphasized that countries, especially « middle powers » like Canada, must act together to defend their interests and not rely on the return of the old order. He said the notion of the rules-based order was largely a useful but outdated fiction, and that nations must aim for greater strategic autonomy — notably by diversifying their trade relations and building more flexible partnerships.

Support for sovereignty and international cooperation

He also reaffirmed Canada’s support for the sovereignty of Greenland and Denmark in the face of pressure from the United States, as well as the importance of international cooperation for security and prosperity, while acknowledging that interdependence can be exploited as a vulnerability.
