Giardiasis is a little-known but relatively common infection within the gay male community. Although it is not officially classified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI), it is often transmitted during sexual activities, particularly among gay men. It can be sexually transmitted, especially during oral-anal sexual practices (such as rimming) or intimate contact where exposure to fecal matter may occur. This is why it is sometimes mentioned in sexual health guides.

In society in general, giardiasis is mainly known for being common in several countries where the water is non-potable or food is undercooked.

What causes giardiasis?

Giardiasis is an intestinal infection caused by a microscopic parasite called Giardia lamblia. It causes digestive issues such as persistent diarrhea, abdominal cramps, gas, and sometimes weight loss. Its cystic form allows it to survive for long periods in the environment.

How is the infection treated?

Giardiasis is effectively treated with antiparasitic medications prescribed by a healthcare professional. In most cases, a treatment of several days is enough to eliminate the parasite and relieve symptoms. It is important to complete the treatment even if symptoms subside quickly to avoid a relapse. In some cases, a second course of treatment may be necessary if the infection persists. During treatment, it is recommended to drink plenty of water to replace fluids lost through diarrhea. Rigorous hygiene, especially handwashing, is essential to prevent reinfection or transmission to others.

Giardiasis can be prevented by avoiding sexual contact involving the anal area, thoroughly washing hands, especially after using the toilet, and ensuring that food served at restaurants is properly cooked and prepared according to hygiene standards.
