After his legal setbacks, has Donald Trump changed his attitude toward LGBTQ+ people?

We know it well now: the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has struck a hard blow to the dignity of people in LGBT communities by unilaterally rolling back, as is his habit, numerous U.S. federal laws that had helped restore a certain balance between society at large and LGBT populations.

The legal setbacks of Donald Trump on LGBT rights

This week, a federal judge struck down the presidential directive banning transgender people from serving in the U.S. military, and court rulings have been multiplying in recent weeks against President Trump’s decrees and executive orders.

Gay Globe therefore sought to find out whether, after stripping away many LGBT rights that were nonetheless guaranteed to LGBT people in the United States, but also around the world—since several countries and heads of state draw inspiration from Trump’s positions to criminalize sexual orientation, notably Senegal, Uganda, and other countries—the President was showing any evolution on issues related to sexual orientation.

As a reminder, a letter had been sent by Gay Globe to the U.S. President during his first term, asking him to consider LGBT people with greater compassion and to act as a good “family father,” as one should. The letter was duly received, with proof of receipt, but the President, or a member of the White House staff, refrained from replying to us.

Donald Trump and homosexual people: a change of position?

In light of recent events, it is difficult to claim that Donald Trump has changed his position toward homosexual people or LGBTQ+ people in general.

On the political level, his administration has continued since 2025 to adopt several measures perceived as unfavorable to LGBTQ+ people, particularly transgender individuals. The most widely publicized remains the ban targeting transgender military personnel, which has however suffered significant setbacks in federal courts. In early June 2026, a federal appeals court ruled that this policy appeared discriminatory and likely unconstitutional, allowing several transgender service members to remain in service while proceedings continue.

On the other hand, these judicial setbacks show that American institutions—federal courts, rights advocacy organizations, and certain states—continue to act as a system of checks and balances. Several executive orders and policies from the Trump administration have thus been suspended, limited, or successfully challenged in court.

Regarding homosexual people specifically, the situation is more nuanced. Donald Trump has not recently made as many openly hostile statements toward gay and lesbian people as he has on transgender issues. However, there is no indication that he has made an ideological shift or expressed increased support for homosexual rights. His discourse remains primarily focused on transgender issues, education, sports, and diversity policies.

Are LGBTQ+ rights progressing despite Trump?

Can indirect improvements be observed? Yes, to some extent. The many legal challenges have strengthened the mobilization of LGBTQ+ rights organizations, and several courts have reaffirmed that certain constitutional protections also apply to sexual and gender minorities. These rulings are creating important legal precedents.

However, on a social level, recent polls show a decline in acceptance of LGBTQ+ rights in certain segments of the U.S. population, particularly among Republican voters. Support for same-sex marriage remains majority, but it is slightly lower than it was a few years ago.

Trump’s legal setbacks have brought certain concrete victories for LGBTQ+ people, particularly in the courts. However, there is currently nothing indicating that Donald Trump has changed his fundamental position toward homosexual people or that he has become more supportive of LGBTQ+ demands. The observed improvements are driven mainly by judicial decisions and institutional resistance rather than any evolution in his political views.
