Backlash on LGBT Community Rights
For several months now, we have witnessed a backlash regarding the rights of LGBT communities, and it is on the international level, particularly since the rise of the new Trump v.2, that the damage is felt.
Cancellation of DEI Policies and Impact
We are observing a wave of cancellation of DEI policies that were initially put in place to protect LGBT individuals from abuse, but above all to help companies better understand the realities faced by members of these communities, whether it be access to healthcare, same-sex parenting, discrimination, or homophobia in the workplace.
Donald Trump’s Influence on LGBT Rights
A large part of this situation stems from the statements of Donald Trump, but also from the barely veiled threats by the United States toward other sovereign states dependent on American aid to function, as Trump now ties this aid to the abandonment of DEI policies, the non-recognition of homosexual rights, or even the refusal to accept the existence and recognition of trans people.
Global Homophobia and Fear of LGBT Communities
As if global homophobia had been waiting for his personal green light.
Another factor explaining the current backlash against the aforementioned communities is fear. This fear of what we collectively represent, as if the LGBT communities were composed of hordes of barbarians ravenous at the sight of straight blood, ready to pounce on their religious beliefs. A kind of remake of the fall of Rome, with Visigoths surrounding the great city from all sides… except here, the threatened empire seems mainly to be that of their certainties.
The Image of “Great Rome” and the Threat of Fixed Certainties
The image of the “great Rome” besieged by invaders perfectly illustrates this impression of being attacked that some project today onto the LGBT communities. Yet, what truly wavers is not an entire civilization, nor even essential values or any kind of social security. What trembles are their own certainties, their fixed worldview, their traditional landmarks to which they cling like sacred ruins.
Defending Ideological Comfort Against Change
In truth, the “empire” they desperately try to defend is not that of society, but of their ideological comfort. An inner territory, sometimes rigid, suddenly feeling threatened as soon as realities they do not master—or preferred to ignore—take a little more space in the public sphere.
Ignorance and Prejudice Facing Diversity
What frightens them so much in our mere existence is their ignorance, their prejudices, and their profound misunderstanding of who we are. In reality, we are like them, we are them, only with a little more experience, a stronger sense of community, and a better quality of life.
Educating to Overcome Fear and Prejudice
Faced with these attacks, our role is to always educate them better, as is done in schools with community groups that explain to students what homosexuality is, just as the new Pope Leo XIV does when he tries to instill in his cardinals a different vision of who we are. Over time, rather than fearing the slightest gay sneeze, we may come to no longer see ourselves as different, but simply as perfectly ordinary, banal people, without story.
Moral of This Story
The true strength of a society lies in its ability to welcome differences without fearing that they threaten its foundations.
