MONTREAL: THE PARK OF DESPAIR

Roger-Luc Chayer

The « Parc de l’Espoir », dedicated to the sweet memory of people who died of AIDS and their entourage and family, in the Gay Village of Montreal, was renovated at a high price in 2021, to the delight of neighbors and people affected by the loss of their spouses and friends. However, during the passage of Gay

Globe Media on December 30, to our greatest amazement and that of our friends who witnessed the inventory, we found that this commemorative park, which falls under the direct responsibility of Valérie Plante, borough mayor, and of Robert Beaudry, municipal councilor, is abandoned.

There were about 10 used masks per square meter and other trash that clearly had been there for months. It’s fine to put large sums of money into major work that gave it a great look last August, let’s admit that a few months later, there is reason to be ashamed to see that the borough does not carry any interest in its upkeep which, however, would only require perhaps an hour a week?

The memory of our departed loved ones deserves better than that. If you wish to express your disgust to municipal officials, Mayor Plante’s email is mairesse@montreal.ca and Mr. Beaudry’s is robert.beaudry@montreal.ca. Speak up, it’s important and if we don’t, who will?
