YEMEN: Thirteen People Sentenced to Death for Homosexuality

According to: AFP – The trial took place in Ibb, a province controlled by Iran-aligned insurgents, whose attacks on ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden disrupt global maritime traffic. A total of sixteen people were on trial, with three receiving prison sentences, according to a judicial source who spoke anonymously as they are not authorized to speak to the press. Thirty-five other people were recently arrested in Ibb for similar reasons, the source added.

In videos sent to AFP, which could not be independently verified, a judge in a court is seen listing the charges against the defendants, including homosexuality, « immorality, » « incitement to debauchery, » and « dissemination of immoral images, » before sentencing them to public execution. The verdict may be appealed.

Why Can’t Police Intervene in Illegal Camps in Public Places in Montreal?

By: Gay Globe – The issue of illegal encampments on private or public land has raised many questions since hundreds of people in Quebec have found themselves homeless due to the housing crisis, inflation, and evictions. However, not all encampments are the same.

In Montreal, for instance, some encampments, like the one dismantled on July 17 by the City of Montreal at the request of the CP, were inhabited by respectable people: retirees, veterans, and the homeless without particularly severe issues. In contrast, other encampments, such as several in the Gay Village, are occupied by criminal gangs who run open-air drug dens and engage in other activities detrimental to the peace of residents. This summer, in a few cases, police were contacted for complaints about noise and activities in city parks. Some of these encampments were open-air dumps. Following these complaints, citizens reportedly were told by the SPVM that they could do nothing without a city order, even in the presence of a municipal bylaw that prohibits park use after 11 p.m.

Gay Globe sought to confirm this information by asking the SPVM Media Relations section. Here is what we received: « In cases of urban encampment dismantling, the SPVM assists various requesters, such as private landowners, municipal authorities, etc. The decision to dismantle, the reading of the eviction notice on-site, and the dismantling itself do not fall under the SPVM’s jurisdiction, except in exceptional cases. »

It is therefore accurate that the City of Montreal must order the police to act. It is urgent that the City do so in the Village to allow for the decriminalization of this area, which suffers greatly from these disturbances.
