Fight Against HIV: PrEP Should Be Free, Says an Organization

According to: Agence QMI – More and more voices are calling on Quebec to offer free coverage of preventive HIV medications, such as PrEP, which can prevent transmission in over 90% of cases. HIV has seen a 120% increase in Montreal, according to public health authorities, prompting some to consider solutions to prevent its transmission.

HIV/AIDS or Homelessness? The Transformation of Sainte-Bibiane Church Divides

According to: Radio-Canada – The City of Montreal is in the process of acquiring Sainte-Bibiane Church, located in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, for $2.5 million to house homeless individuals. The sticking point: a community housing organization for people with HIV/AIDS, Maison d’Hérelle, was already in the process of moving into the church’s presbytery. The project is causing concern among some neighborhood residents, who lament the opacity surrounding the project and would prefer that Maison d’Hérelle inherit the church to house people with HIV/AIDS rather than a resource for homeless individuals.

Omega-3s Could Slow Prostate Cancer Progression

According to: Université Laval – Omega-3s could slow the growth of prostate tumors, and they may exert their effects through the gut microbiota. This is suggested by a study published in Nature Communications by a research team from Université Laval, McGill University, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. The researchers arrived at this conclusion after examining the link between the gut microbiota and the aggressiveness of prostate tumors from several angles. Initially, they analyzed the gut microbiota of 62 men diagnosed with prostate cancer who were awaiting prostate resection. After surgery, the researchers subdivided the patients into three groups based on their tumor volume. Their finding: patients with tumors in the upper third volume had an 8% less diverse microbiota than those with tumors in the lower third.

Parkinson’s: Coenzyme Q10 Could Slow Disease Progression

According to: Psychomédia – A phase 3 clinical trial aims to verify the effectiveness of high-dose coenzyme Q10 (also called CoQ10 or ubiquinone) in slowing the progression of Parkinson’s disease. Several studies have shown that people with Parkinson’s disease have impaired mitochondrial function and low levels of coenzyme Q10. Laboratory studies have also shown that coenzyme Q10 could protect the brain region damaged by Parkinson’s disease. The clinical trial will be conducted with 600 people with the disease at 60 centers in the United States and Canada. It follows a study conducted with a small group of people with early-stage Parkinson’s disease.
