Ethics and Privacy

Ethics

The Gay Globe Group is a media organization officially registered with the Quebec Business Registry since May 1998. Gay Globe adheres to the highest ethical standards in its publications. While there is no legal obligation in Quebec for journalists to join associations, the province’s primary professional body is the Fédération Professionnelle des Journalistes du Québec (FPJQ), which offers a code of ethics on its website. Gay Globe voluntarily follows this guide in principle and uses it as a reference for managing its publications.

Regarding specific publications, there is no automatic right of reply. However, any individual concerned by an article may contact Gay Globe by email to provide additional relevant information, which may help correct or adjust the original content. If the information provided is deemed accurate and verifiable, Gay Globe commits to publishing these responses.

All content on Gay Globe’s website is protected by copyright, officially registered with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. Unauthorized use, modification, or distribution of original written, visual, audio, or electronic content will result in immediate civil and criminal proceedings. We kindly ask you to respect copyright laws and request authorization before using protected material.

However, Canadian copyright law provides an exception known as fair dealing, which allows journalists or students to use portions of our content for reviews or reporting under strict conditions. Additionally, the Le Point news feed may reference or publish news from external sources, provided proper attribution is given.

For complaints, information requests, or to submit a response, please use email as the sole communication channel at info@gayglobe.net.

Privacy Protection Principles

Because protecting personal information is of utmost importance, the Gay Globe website operates under the following principles:

  • The Gay Globe website is not used as a vehicle for collecting personal information (name, address, email, or any other data that could identify an individual).
  • In certain cases, Gay Globe may request that the user subscribe. Users may decline; if accepted, the information provided will serve primarily to:
    • Help tailor content relevance based on the user’s country of origin;
    • Assist in evaluating and improving the website content, interface, and new services;
    • Maintain decorum and quality in forums and discussions;
    • Inform the user about news or events of interest if they have subscribed.
  • If the user subscribes, Gay Globe will never disclose personal information to third parties, except in aggregated, anonymized form—for example, announcing that “62 % of site users live in Montreal” without revealing names or addresses.
  • Users who opt not to subscribe still retain access to most sections of the site but cannot reach areas requiring identification or paid services.

Privacy Policy and Email Use – References:

The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) aims to facilitate and promote electronic commerce by safeguarding personal information collected, used, or disclosed in certain situations. It also enables the use of electronic means for communication or recording of data and transactions, amending the Canada Evidence Act, Statutory Instruments Act, and the Interpretation Act.

For PIPEDA purposes, “document” includes all forms of information—correspondence, notes, books, plans, diagrams, illustrations, graphics, photographs, films, microfilms, sound or video recordings, computer files or reproductions thereof. “Personal information” refers to any data about an identifiable individual, excluding the person’s name, job title (as an organizational employee), and their business address or phone number.

Policy Statement

Gay Globe has adopted a policy to manage the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information in line with standards set by PIPEDA. Under certain conditions, personal information may be gathered, used, or disclosed without individual consent or knowledge. Such cases include:

  • Legal, medical, or security reasons;
  • Fraud detection and prevention or law enforcement;

Gay Globe must comply with the following principles unless exempted by PIPEDA:

  • Accountability: Gay Globe is responsible for the personal information it manages and must appoint a Privacy Management Coordinator to ensure compliance.
  • Purpose of Collection: Purposes for collecting personal information must be defined at or before collection.
  • Consent: Individuals must be informed and must consent to the collection, use, or disclosure of their personal information.
  • Limiting Collection: Only necessary personal information should be collected in a fair, lawful manner.

  • Accuracy: Personal information must be accurate, complete, and up-to-date.
  • Security: Appropriate safeguards must protect personal information based on its sensitivity level.
  • Openness: Clear information about privacy practices must be readily available.
  • Access to Personal Information: Individuals may request disclosure, access, and correction of their personal information.
  • Right to File a Complaint: Individuals may file complaints if these principles are not upheld, by contacting Gay Globe’s designated officers.

Accountability

All Gay Globe employees who collect, store, or use personal information must ensure compliance with this policy and appropriate procedures. The Editorial Department is responsible for establishing procedures, guidelines, and timelines for policy implementation. The Privacy Management Coordinator oversees Gay Globe’s personal information policies and practices. Complaints and information requests should be directed to this person.

Application

For questions regarding interpretation or implementation of this policy, please contact the Privacy Management Coordinator.

Privacy Standards

The personal information protection provisions are based on the CSA International Model Code for the Protection of Personal Information, recognized as a national standard in 1996. This standard outlines how organizations may collect, use, and disclose personal information, and addresses individuals’ rights to access and correct their information. These principles, subject to certain exceptions, are reflected in PIPEDA and Gay Globe’s privacy policy.

The ten principles outlined in the Code are as follows:

  1. Accountability: An organization is responsible for personal information under its control and must designate individuals to ensure compliance.
  2. Identifying Purposes of Collection: Purposes must be identified before or at the time of collection.
  3. Consent: Individuals must be informed and consent to collection, use, or disclosure of personal information.
  4. Limiting Collection: Collection must be limited to necessary information, and done fairly and lawfully.
  5. Limiting Use, Disclosure, and Retention: Personal information must not be used beyond its original purposes and should only be retained as necessary.
  6. Accuracy: Information must be accurate, complete, and up-to-date.
  7. Security Measures: Adequate safeguards must protect sensitive personal information.
  8. Transparency: Clear policies and practices must be easily accessible.
  9. Access to Personal Information: Individuals must be able to access and correct their information.
  10. No Personal Information Retained: No personal information about visitors is kept in Gay Globe’s systems or site.
