Humanity is not all at the same level of civilization, and the worst case of genocide against homosexuals is occurring in Yemen in 2024. This Arab country is located at the southwestern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. It has a land border with Saudi Arabia to the north and with Oman to the northeast, as well as a maritime border with Djibouti and Eritrea to the west and Somalia to the south. It has a significant coastline on the Gulf of Aden, a smaller one on the Red Sea, and, together with Djibouti, controls the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait that leads to the Suez Canal.

For several years, an extremely violent civil war has been raging there. In addition to attacking Israel with the help of Iran, its main leaders are also attacking neighbors like Saudi Arabia. The reasons are purely religious.

In countries plagued by civil wars, ethnic, sexual, or religious minorities are generally targeted, always with the aim of blaming local troubles on others who cannot defend themselves. This allows governments to capitalize on these persecutions and stay in power as long as possible. Obviously, we all understand that the leaders’ goal is to line their own pockets.

The Exception of Yemen

Yemen is, however, the country that has most openly engaged in the public executions of homosexuals simply because of their sexual orientation. A gender identity genocide is being carried out there without any restraint. One only needs to read the execution notices to understand the gravity of the situation.

Thirteen people accused of homosexuality were sentenced to death in Yemen by a court in a region controlled by Houthi rebels, a judicial source told AFP on Tuesday, February 6.

The Yemeni authorities have sentenced several people to death for alleged homosexual acts. According to reports, seven people are condemned to stoning and two others to crucifixion. Amnesty International, the human rights advocacy group, has condemned the situation.

Hundreds of people are executed this way each year in Yemen. According to Wikipedia, homosexuality is illegal in Yemen, in accordance with the Sharia legal system in place in the country. The penalties range from flogging to death. Yemen is one of seven countries that applies the death penalty for consensual sexual relations between adults of the same sex. In terms of human rights, security forces have been responsible for torture, inhumane treatment, and even extrajudicial executions.

What is Sharia?

Sharia, or Islamic law, is based on interpretations of the Quran and the hadiths. Certain verses and religious narratives are used by conservative scholars to condemn homosexuality, particularly referencing the story of the people of Lot (or Loth), which is often seen as a divine punishment for homosexual acts. This traditional interpretation of Sharia considers homosexuality a severe transgression of divine law.

In many societies where Sharia is strictly applied, cultural and social norms strongly value public morality and traditional family values. Homosexuality is viewed as a threat to these values, justifying severe sanctions against those who practice it. Additionally, some governments use the strict application of Sharia, including punishments for homosexuality, as a means of controlling the population and maintaining social order.

What is humanity doing to stop these executions?

Unfortunately, external interventions are often limited to speeches and condemnations by international organizations such as the UN or non-governmental human rights organizations. This war-torn country is highly resistant to external influences, and Western countries can do little due to Yemen’s proximity to Iran, its main provider of funds and economic support.
