Often women, the muses find themselves in the environment of the artists. The term refers to the Muses of Greek mythology, nine spring nymphs and sister daughters of Zeus and the spring goddess Mnemosyne (goddess of memory). They are dedicated to Apollo, the god of the arts. The word muse is, in modern times, beginning to apply to real people: friends or mistresses of artists, sometimes men. These muses inspire by their character, their charisma, their solicitude or by their erotic appeal.
